Ant control

Rentokil offers methods of ant control that are targeted to specific ant species. Our pest control technicians can solve nuisance ant problems quickly and, needless to say, with treatments that are safe for people, pets and the environment.

While a wide range of do-it-yourself products are available for ants, effective control requires a professional pest control service to gain control and prevent reinfestation.  Our pest control technicians understand the habits of different types of ants and can offer the most appropriate and effective solutions.

Ant pest removal methods

Ant inspection and identification

New Zealand actually has very few species of ants compared with most countries - 11 native and 29 introduced, mainly from Australia. Our technicians will inspect problem areas, following ant trails to locate nesting sites and determine where they are entering and feeding. During the inspection, your Rentokil expert will identify the  species and its particular feeding habits. This will inform the baiting method chosen, for example, the use of sugar or protein based baits.

Ant monitoring

To help identify activity areas and hot spots, insect monitors can be placed around your home or business environment, with particular attention to food sources or areas or high moisture.

Ant baiting

Baits are particularly useful in controlling most ant species, but this can be a relatively slow procedure so may require perseverance. Ant baits are a mixture of insecticide and food designed to attract pests. They are effective when a nest is inaccessible for treatment with other chemicals and can kill an entire colony: worker ants find the bait and carry it back to their nest where it is fed to the Queen, brood and other worker ants.

Ant insecticide spray

Insecticide treatment spray is applied to nesting sites, areas of ant access and travel such as paths, skirting boards, window sills, cupboards, cracks and crevices. Insecticides can also be used for treating nests located in enclosed spaces with sites of activity, or as a barrier method around the property.

Ant insecticide dust

Insecticide dust is used predominantly in internal areas. It is applied in cracks and crevices, such as weep holes, and is useful in sensitive areas such as power boxes and roof voids. Dust particles are picked up by worker ants who transfer them to the nest, killing others in the colony who come into contact. It is not recommended for dust to be used outside as it may become unsettled and windblown.

How much does ant control cost?

There are a list of factors that will contribute to the cost of ant control:

The size and extent of the ant infestation in your home or business affect the costs of the ant treatment service. Problem ants are often perceived as those that have established residence within a property. They are commonly soldier ants on a mission to return to their nest with food supply.

The treatment required to address the ant infestation will relate to the overall costs of the service. There may be a need to combine ant control treatments methods and use them in conjunction with each other, whilst other times one method may suffice.

The larger the property, the more time required to successfully locate and treat the ant problem. This will have an effect on the cost of the treatment.

Sometimes ant management requires multiple treatments for successful control. This can be reflected with the pricing of the ant control service. For example, insect monitoring stations may require a revisit to ensure the problem is completely resolved.
