4 reasons why Lumnia is a better commercial fly trap

Flies are a major risk to any businesses handling food such as hotels, restaurants, supermarkets as well as food processing facilities due to the threat they cause to food safety as a result of their ability to spread diseases.

To add to this, research has shown that flies are the most disruptive pests, being one of the leading causes of staff illnesses as well as generating concerns around loss of income and compensation claims.

With this in mind, Rentokil has developed a new range of commercial fly traps based on years of research from our Global Research and Development centre utilising an innovative LED technology to provide businesses with a superior solution to hygienically control flies.

Why is Lumnia an effective commercial fly trap?

The new range of electric fly killers are more efficient fly control solution, providing businesses with a more green solution to hygienically control fly infestations, preventing the risk of contamination.

Here are 4 reasons behind what makes Lumnia such an effective commercial fly control solution.

1. Low power consumption

The innovative use of LED UV bulbs in the Lumnia range saves on average 61% of energy usage compared to equivalent electric fly killers.

Our Lumnia units offer three power levels, low, medium and high for different levels of light around the unit. So power usage can be reduced even further when a brighter light is not needed.

Each power level can also have an adaptive mode which senses the level of light around the unit and reduces the power automatically if the light level falls. Therefore at night and in low light levels the power and the output of the LED bulbs can be reduced whilst still effectively attract flies.

2. Greater reach of UV light

Another benefit to the use of LED technology is that the horizontal reach of UV light emitted from the LED bulbs is 40% greater than traditional fluorescent tubes. This gives Lumnia a greater range over which it is attractive to flies while using less power.

The graph shows the envelope of the effective light range, in distance from the unit and vertically above and below the unit. This test data shows that the Lumnia LED bulbs utilised within our commercial fly traps are more effective at attracting flies in a much greater space than traditional fluorescent bulbs.

3. LEDs tuned to flies’ eyes

Once again, the LED technology utilised within our Lumnia units provides customers with a superior commercial fly control trap by emitting the same wavelength of ultraviolet light that flies can see. This means that the light from our Lumnia units is far more attractive to flies.

The graph below shows the wavelengths of light that a house fly’s eyes can detect. This shows that the fly’s photoreceptors are tuned to wavelengths around 350 nanometres, which is close to the UV output of the Lumnia LEDs (365 nm).

4. Easy to service

Our Lumnia units have been designed so that it is easy to service. A simple release mechanism lets the unit slide down 30 cm closer to the ground to make it safer to access and service the unit.

This includes quick changing of the glue boards, glue rolls in the model that has a motorised encapsulation unit, and the LED light strips (which only need to be changed around every three years).

The unit is safe to be placed at head height, so servicing can be carried out while the technician is standing on the floor.
