Bed bug treatment options

As evidenced by their massive resurgence in the last decade, bed bugs are very elusive, secretive pests. The parasitic insects are highly difficult to get rid of through do-it-yourself solutions. It’s always best to hire an experienced pest control company to provide bed bug control services.

With over 90 years in the industry, Rentokil has developed a full complement of bed bug solutions for homes and commercial spaces.

  • Conventional treatments - Rentokil conventional treatment is the most commonly used solution for the elimination of bed bugs. Our state-licensed Technicians apply formulations to the infested areas of a space, making sure all potential bed bug hiding spaces receive treatment.

  • Heat treatments - Entotherm heat treatments are commonly used to treat bed bugs. The one-day treatment uses minimal pesticides, providing customers with a quick and environmentally friendly solution. Using portable heaters, infested spaces are gradually heated to 120ºF, killing all presence of bed bugs at all life stages.

  • Bed bug dogs - Bed bug dog inspections - In some cases, your Technician may recommend a K-9 bed bug inspection. Dogs have the ability to detect odors that are completely unnoticeable to humans, including bed bugs. Our bed bug dogs have been trained using the same methodology as bomb-sniffing dogs.

  • Steam treatments - Similar to heat treatments, steam can be used to kill bed bugs through subjecting them to high temperatures. A great alternative to using pesticides, steaming a space also has the benefit of reaching deeper recesses of a space.

How to prevent bed bugs

You can prevent a bed bug infestation in your home by being careful to not bring bed bugs back to your residence when traveling.

Tips to keep bed bugs from hitching a ride home:

  • When you stay at a hotel, make sure you search for bed bugs BEFORE you unpack. Bed bugs are most commonly found behind the headboard of a bed but can also be spotted on any part of the bed or on any furniture in the room.
  • If you notice something suspicious - notify hotel staff immediately and ask to move rooms to be extra safe. Ensure you are not moved into a room directly adjacent, underneath or below your previous room, as bed bugs are known to easily spread into adjacent rooms.
  • To further help prevent the return of bed bugs, Rentokil offers mattress encasements and box-spring encasements that make it impossible for bed bugs to get through and start an infestation again. They can also guard against dust mites and mold.
  • Do NOT place luggage on the bed - do not place luggage on or near your sleeping area or any upholstered items - bed bugs prefer carpeted, soft areas. Instead, place luggage on luggage racks, on dressers, desks and even in bathtubs - bed bugs find it difficult to walk on polished surfaces.
  • Inspect your luggage while repacking - check your clothes and the inside of your luggage (including all zipped compartments) for any sign of these insects to avoid transporting them home.
  • Wash your clothes once you return home - and if you find bed bugs it’s advisable to either place belongings in the freezer or laundering in hot, soapy water and drying in high heat.
