Achieving net zero carbon 2040 with sustainable pest control solutions

Our purpose is to protect people, enhance lives and preserve the planet. At Rentokil, we’re on a mission to find new ways to effectively control pests while minimising our impact on the environment.

Rentokil understands that increased human activity poses risks to the world. Widespread industrialization and urbanization raise greenhouse gas emissions, triggering global warming, more frequent weather extremes, rising sea levels, and other environmental, economic and human costs. These factors are combining to create environments where certain pest populations are thriving, increasing risks to public health and business operations.

As a leader in commercial pest control, we are committed to taking meaningful action in our business and helping customers achieve sustainability goals with effective and eco-friendly pest control solutions.

Championing sustainable pest control

We align our activities with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and are committed to driving positive change across every aspect of our supply chain and operations to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

Our manifesto for achieving net zero covers five key pledges.

1. Embracing more non-toxic solutions

We are finding better ways to prevent, detect and target infestations, wherever possible using non-toxic treatments.

We are committed to reducing the use of harmful chemicals in pest control. With an expanding range of non-toxic options, new proofing products and digitally connected solutions.

Our Flexi Armour Rodent Proofing range is a highly effective proofing solution, providing impenetrable barriers to entry. It reduces the potential risks of rodent infestations within premises, which in turn reduces the need to use rodenticides to control rodents.

Rentokil provides an effective solution for pest control using steam heat technology. This chemical-free method eliminates all life stages of insects in just one treatment, ensuring thorough and safe eradication.

PestConnect provides a real-time warning system for rodent monitoring and control. It offers 24x7 effective monitoring and fast control of rodent pests, saving customers time and money dealing with costly infestations. With this solution, we’ve achieved up to a 40% reduction in rodenticide usage.

2. Making a difference with every innovation

We deliver our services and design every new innovation we bring to market with sustainability firmly in mind.

We’re constantly innovating to bring to market new products, such as the energy saving Lumnia range of LED fly control units, that enable more-effective pest control with less environmental impact. We’re applying our expertise to outsmart pests with more energy-efficient and recyclable solutions that use fewer resources and are less reliant on chemicals.

Our global centre for science and innovation is at the forefront of behavioural science and observational research uncovering new, more effective ways to identify and target pests without harming the environment. 100% of the pipeline solutions we are bringing to market will have a positive impact on our environmental performance.

Lumnia is the world’s first range of insect traps to use LEDs to attract and control flying insects hygienically. It has 62% lower carbon emissions than traditional fluorescent bulbs and has delivered electricity savings for our customers equivalent to over 38,700 tonnes* CO2.

3. Live, breathe and act sustainably

We’re analysing all aspects of our operations, workplaces and supply chain, to build a culture of sustainability throughout the company to ensure we’re proactively taking measures to reduce our environmental impact.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Whether it’s transitioning to electric vehicles across our fleet, switching to green energy tariffs across our properties or choosing to source from sustainable suppliers, we’re taking proactive steps to deliver on our net zero commitments.

In 2024, Rentokil Indonesia deployed 35 electric motorcycles for operational use at the Jakarta branches. These electric motorcycles are projected to save roughly 8,062 liters of gasoline annually and cut CO2 emissions by 16.9 tons annually.

Sustainable supply chains

We are working with suppliers to minimise their own climate related impacts and those of our products.

Property energy saving

In 2024, Rentokil Indonesia replaced conventional lighting with sensor-equipped lights across 45 branches nationwide, including public areas such as corridors, stairways, and prayer rooms. This initiative aims to reduce electricity consumption by 2% for every 1 million GBP.

By implementing this efficient technology, Rentokil Indonesia is committed to enhancing energy efficiency and supporting environmental sustainability.

4. Reduce, reuse & recycle

Our aim is to measure and reduce the waste we generate as a business to zero landfill and incineration, while increasing the use of recycled materials in our products and across our operations.

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact from waste. Our goal is for 100% of our waste material to be reused, recycled or repurposed for conversion into energy by 2035. To ensure full accountability, we’ve also put in place plans to better measure our waste across our major markets.

Using less virgin plastics

Reducing paper usage and battery waste

A reduction of 2,965 kg in paper usage has been achieved by transitioning to the digital Site Risk Assessment (SRA) application across 10 branches. We also promote online reporting through myRentokil & myCalmic to our customers, cutting at least 8 tons of paper usage annually. Additionally, we have saved 3.9%, or approximately 58,000 large D-size batteries, in toilet seat cleaner units through durability and frequency assessments.

Recycling waste

In partnership with a waste management company, two branches have recycled 2 tons of plastic, 207 kg of metal, and 209 kg of paper, reducing the equivalent of 1 ton of carbon emissions.

5. Partnering to preserve the planet

We build long-term partnerships that support greater biodiversity and benefit the environment for future generations.

As a leader in global pest control, we recognise the importance of acting responsibly and use our resources, scale and influence to proactively protect the environment. That’s why we’ve established relationships with environmental charities and communities across the world to support their work in preventing deforestation, promoting biodiversity and fighting the climate crisis.

In 2024, we are planting 2,500 mangrove trees on Tidung Island, Thousand Islands. Mangroves are widely recognized for their role in protecting coastlines by reducing erosion, strengthening shorelines, and absorbing carbon dioxide to combat climate change. Additionally, mangroves provide crucial habitats for various fish and bird species.

Through our partnership with the Wanadri Mountain and Forest Explorers Association, Rentokil is acting as a tree guardian by planting 800 trees in the Kareumbi Masigit Wildlife Sanctuary, West Java. This initiative aims to green approximately 4,913 square meters of forest land, equivalent to storing around 73.7 tons of carbon.

In 2023, Rentokil Indonesia planted 200 tree seedlings in the Serengseng Urban Forest, West Jakarta, through a tree planting program. This initiative involved 50 employees from the head office, each representing different departments, planting seedlings of nyamplung, meranti, and salam trees.
