There are more than 300 mosquito species found in Australia, some of which bite, like the Aedes Camptorhynchus, and others like the Anopheles Annulipes which pose a general nuisance but do not carry disease. The female species is responsible for the irritating bites we suffer - often in the summer - and these bites can also carry fatal diseases. Your qualified Rentokil technician will examine the premises of your home or business to highlight any conditions conducive to mosquito breeding. These may include land contouring, potted plants, water features, window screens and vents, water collecting plants, rain water storage and proofing.
Larvicide treatment prevents bottom and surface feeding larvae from developing into adults. It is suitable for treating standing water and when applied to dry surfaces, it will become activated by water.
Adulticide treatment is a water-based, non-staining, low-odour treatment that can be applied to shrubs and ornamental plants. It is used internally and externally for immediate and residual control.
Commercial entities may require regular inspections, including testing the mosquito levels at stagnant water sites where mosquitoes can develop. These inspections are partnered with regular treatment in the same areas. The reports created from mosquito level testing are made available in Rentokil’s online reporting and analysis system, myRentokil.
Mosquito Knockdown provides population reduction control for an event. It’s a moment-in-time knockdown treatment targeting the adult mosquito population, and as a result, the probability of being bitten. It includes a residual spray treatment to all surfaces and suitable vegetation (excluding flowering plants to protect bees) and is carried out as close to the event date as possible, to target adult female mosquitoes looking for their next feed.
Mosquito Management is a long term program designed to deal with all stages of a mosquito for continual mosquito population control. Home and business owners may choose to have regular services over a season or spaced throughout the year, but it is recommended that treatments are carried out no longer than 8 weeks apart for effective mosquito management.

Generally, November to April are considered the mosquito months. In tropical northern Australia, mosquitoes can be present all year round.
Mosquito activity varies between species, but most in Australia will search for a blood feed at dawn and at dusk (twilight) in line with their internal body clock.
There are a variety of factors that attract mosquitoes - high contrast colours attract them, as their compounded eyes are fragmented and therefore less focused, only seeing their prey from about 20 – 30 feet away. Mosquitoes also use thermal sensors to detect and hone in on body heat, but the greatest attractant for mosquitoes is our odour; a female mosquito can smell body odour and an exhale of carbon dioxide from up to 170 feet away.
Mosquitoes are poor fliers and only move a few metres from their original breeding place. They search for a suitable host and feed on their blood, then find a resting place to digest and develop eggs. They will then deposit the eggs in a nearby suitable aquatic environment. Eggs can lay dormant until the warmer months when they begin to hatch.
To make your outdoor area mosquito-free, remove standing water where mosquitoes breed, such as bird baths, gutters, or plant saucers. Use mosquito repellents or citronella candles and install screens on outdoor areas. Additionally, consider using mosquito traps or a professional pest control service for long-term prevention. Landscaping with mosquito-repellent plants like lavender or citronella grass can also help reduce their presence.
