Wasp control

There are over 4,000 types of wasps in the United States. Though not all wasps are aggressive, they are considered pests for the painful stings they can inflict. Wasp control is warranted in circumstances when a wasps nest is established in an area in close proximity to people, putting your customers and employees at risk. Rentokil provides commercial facilities of all types with effective wasp nest removal services.

How Rentokil performs wasp control treatments

If you identify a wasp nest on your property, we highly recommend hiring a licensed pest control company like Rentokil to remove the nest. Proper training and protective gear are needed to remove a stinging insect nest successfully and safely.

Prior to presenting you with a treatment plan, your specialist will conduct a visual inspection of the exterior of your property including, but not limited to:

  • Eaves, wall voids, overhangs and shutters
  • Attic spaces, fascias, rafters
  • Garages and garden sheds
  • Porches, decks and patios
  • Trash cans or garbage areas
  • Light fixtures
  • Burrows in the ground

Your specialist will be equipped with personal protection gear, a stinging insect pole and various treatment materials. Particular wasp species require different methods of treatment, but Rentokil specialists are trained to identify different wasp species and recommend the most appropriate control method for your situation.

How to deter wasps

Prevention is key if you want to avoid problems with wasps, especially during the summer months when they are most active. Here are some tips to keep wasps off of your property.

  • Check for nests - Check your property in early spring for nests. At this point they will be walnut or golf ball in size - early small nests have fewer wasps and are easier to treat quickly. Look for nests in lofts, garages, sheds, cavity walls or under eaves.
  • Secure bins - Ensure outside bins have tightly fitting lids. Keep bins at a distance from doors and windows so wasps are not attracted to the contents.
  • Keep windows and doors shut - This includes repairing any damaged screens or glass. Wasps can easily fly in undetected when windows and doors are not closed properly.
  • Stay away - If you have spotted a nest, it is best to keep people away from it until it is treated.
  • Get early nest treatment - The sooner the wasp nest is treated, the better.

Types of wasps

Wasps vs bees

Wasps are fairly large flying insects that are most often black and yellow in color but can be yellow and brown. Wasps have two wings, and unlike bees, wasps have narrower waists with much less body hair. Aside from their differences in appearance, wasps are generally more aggressive and predatory than bees. Also, they can sting multiple times, unlike a bee that loses its stinger after one sting. This makes wasps the more dangerous of the two.
