Shocking Growth of Dengue Cases in Malaysia

Fourteen construction sites in Selangor ordered to stop work after Aedes mosquitoes have been found breeding in the premises during the Ops Gempur Aedes conducted by the Ministry of Health.

As of 26th April, the numbers of dengue cases in Malaysia have hit 29,788 in 2014. This shows a significant increase of 277% compared to 7,912 cases recorded in the same period in 2013.

Year to date, 66 deaths due to dengue were reported compared to 15 deaths last year, which is a shocking increment of 340%.

Selangor holds the highest record of 577 cases year to date, followed by Kelantan with 85 cases and Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya with 80 cases.

A total number of 974 dengue cases were reported in just one week from 20th – 26th April with a slight decrease compared to 1,252 cases reported the week before.

“Although there is a downward trend in the number of cases at the moment, people are advised not to be complacent and to take care of their living environment”, said the Health Minister.

As the number of dengue cases and mosquito breeding sites continue to remain high, here are some tips on ways to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from breeding in your home and its surroundings:

• Turn pails and water containers over to prevent water from accumulating.
• Change water in vases and keep flower pots dry to deter the breeding of mosquitoes.
• Clear leaves and rubbishes that clog and cause water to accumulate in your roof gutters and drains.
