5 Reasons Why Rats are Smart and Difficult to Control

Many people never think that rats are smart animals. Just how the ingenuity of rats is the main reason why they are very difficult to control when they have found access to your house.

Here are 5 reasons why rats are smart and difficult to control at home:

  1. Rats have flexible bodies.
  2. Rats can multiply quickly.
  3. Rats have very good memories.
  4. Rats are eaters of everything.
  5. Rats like to hide in places people can’t reach.

Rats have flexible bodies.

Rats body sizes vary widely depending on the species or type of rat. However, in general, the body size of rat pests ranges from a few inches to up to 10 inches for large rats in Indonesia.

The ability of a rat to enter a house through a hole or gap as small as 1 cm makes many people wonder if the rat has a body made up of soft bones. In fact, rats have a body structure consisting of bones connected to joints and cartilage, just like humans.

The long, cylindrical shape of the rats is the main reason why they can easily enter your home. Flexible rat bodies make it easy for them to do things like run in tunnels and through tight spaces, jump, and climb to the smallest gap.

Rats multiply quickly.

Of course, it’s no longer a secret that rats can multiply quickly. A female rat generally conceives 6–8 times a year, with a relatively short gestation period of 21–24 days.

In general, female rats can give birth to 12 or more mice, although in many cases, female rats often give birth to 5–10 mice.

One of the reasons why rats can multiply quickly is their ability to achieve sexual maturity in a fairly short time: male rats (10–12 weeks) and female rats (8–9 weeks).

This means that a population of rats can grow rapidly from just two rats to about 1,250 rats in a year. In fact, a pair of rats can produce about 2,000 mice a year if left unattended!

Rats have very good memories.

Rats are one of the animals that have very poor vision. What they see will look blurry, especially when the object they see is a few meters away.

Even so, who would have thought that rats are smart animals equipped with very good memories? Through this special memory, rats easily recalled and dictated the space and all the routes they had been taking for a long time.

Interestingly, rats were also known to be able to remember the human face and recognise people they had seen before. This makes them more vigilant when dealing with humans and trying to capture them.

Rats are eaters of everything.

The food rats like depends on where the rat lives and the type of rat itself. Nonetheless, rats, as pests, are known as omnivores and opportunistic eaters. They will eat whatever they find; this also includes food eaten by humans.

  • Roof rats can feed on meat and grains, but their preferred foods are fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
  • This type of sewer rat chooses a much more balanced type of food compared to the roof rat. The favourite foods of the sewer rats include seeds, fruits, cereal nuts, meat, and fish.

Looking at the habits of rats in choosing their food, it is very important that you always keep your home clean, especially where there are many raw ingredients or ready meals that we usually consume at home.

Rats like to hide in places people can’t reach.

Rats are shy, more active animals found at night (nocturnal). This is why rats like to hide where it is dark and warm in your home.

Rats build their nests inside your home by collecting and shredding soft materials that can easily be found in your home environment, such as cloth, cardboard, and paper.

Where rats are hiding is actually dependent on the type of rats found to be threatening your home. However, house rats will choose to nest in places that are difficult for humans to reach.

Here are some places where rats often nest:

  • Rooftop
  • Under or behind household appliances, such as stoves or refrigerators
  • Behind the walls
  • At air vents
  • Inside a garage or warehouse
  • Car engine

How can I get my rats to leave the house?

Rats can be persistent pests that can interfere with your home. Even worse, it's not easy to remove rats from your house, especially if they can easily meet basic survival needs inside your home, such as:

  • Food source
  • Water source
  • Nesting place

The best way to prevent rats is to not give them access to food sources, water, or nesting places in your home:

  • Keep your home clean by not stacking used items like newspapers and used cardboard, which can be rat hideaways.
  • Store all groceries in tightly sealed containers.
  • Do not leave dirty dishes in the kitchen sink overnight.
  • Regularly empty trash cans and do not leave trash in plastic bags in the house.
  • Make sure there are no leaks in the pipes and drains at home.
