A Stored Product Insect (SPI) infestation can often develop unnoticed, hidden away inside packaging and at the back of shelves. By the time pests are clearly visible, the problem may already be widespread. Knowing the early warning signs is essential for catching an issue before it gets out of hand.
Whether you manage a large commercial warehouse or a home kitchen, here are the key signs to look for.
The most obvious sign is seeing the insects, but it's important to know what you're looking for. Keep an eye out for the different life stages.
Adults: You might notice small moths fluttering around cupboards, especially at night, or find small beetles crawling on shelves, floors, or benchtops.
Larvae: In many cases, the larvae are the most destructive stage. Look for small, caterpillar-like grubs (moth larvae) or hairy, worm-like creatures (beetle larvae) in or around food packaging.
Often, you will see the evidence left behind by SPIs before you see the insects themselves. Be on the lookout for:
Webbing and Cocoons: Fine, silken webbing in food products is a classic sign of the Indian Meal Moth. You might see food particles clumped together by these threads, or find cocoons in corners of packaging and on shelves.
Damaged Packaging: SPIs can chew through paper, cardboard, and thin plastic. Look for tiny, unexplained holes in boxes and bags.
Clumped or Caked Food: The moisture produced by larvae can cause grains, flour, and other powdered products to clump together and feel damp.
Unpleasant Odours: A significant infestation can produce a musty or stale odour in your pantry or storage area.
Fine Dust or Powder: Check shelves for a fine powder, known as frass (insect waste), which may accumulate near infested items.
SPIs prefer dark, undisturbed places. When inspecting, be thorough and check these common hotspots:
In the Home: The back of pantry shelves, inside unsealed food containers, at the bottom of cereal boxes, and in bags of pet food or birdseed.
In a Business: Warehouse racking, silos, processing and conveying equipment, loading docks, and areas where spillages might occur.
If you spot any of these signs, it warrants a closer look. A confirmed infestation requires a structured approach to manage. The specialists at Rentokil have the expertise to inspect your property, identify the specific pest, and advise on an appropriate course of action.
