Both male and female mosquitoes feed mainly on fruit and plant nectar, but female mosquitoes feed on blood as she needs the protein to help her eggs develop. A mosquito bite is not usually painful, but the itchiness that follows a bite can cause some discomfort.
When the female mosquitoes feed on blood, she will inject her saliva, which contains anti-coagulants enzymes and proteins that affect the victims’s clotting ability. As most people are allergic to these enzymes, the itch and bump that appear after the bite is our allergic response to them.
Avoid dark colours - Dark coloured clothing or usage of strong scents such as perfumes and deodorants are prone to attract insects.
Reduce exposed skin - Wear long sleeves, trousers, footwear and hats.
Avoid areas with water - Keep clear of slow moving or still water because mosquitoes usually breed on stagnant water.
Tuck trousers into socks - When hiking through bush or rough grass and avoid brushing through long grass or bushes.
