Have you come across a daunting termite news or story that could possibly make your jaw drop? Or have you or anyone you knew shared some traumatising experience about termites that you never thought could have happen? Well, what you are about to read next is going to blow your mind and probably get your home checked immediately!
House destroyed by termites
We all know termites as tiny creatures but in reality, they come with the capability to tear your house down. This was what happened in New Orleans, which has caught the media’s attention and got everyone reading twice on the headline.
Apparently, the house that was still under construction collapsed and injured two workers on the scene. According to investigations, the cause of the incident was due to serious termite damage to the structure's load-bearing top plates that was not visible during the initial inspection. This terrifying incident left the workers traumatised as they were just seconds away from escaping the house before it went down! The workers fortunately only suffered leg injuries from the accident. However, part of the house happened to collapse on the driver’s side of a GMC truck, dislodging a tire.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, an elderly lady from Adelaide experienced a shock as she was trapped under her bedroom ceiling after it fell on her while she was sleeping. Thankfully she only sustained minor injuries from that incident. Police investigators reported that it was caused by a severe termite infestation.
How can termites ruin your home?
If a termite infestation is left untreated, homeowners will have to anticipate nothing but major headaches as termites are likely to consume woods at a fast pace. While eating wood, termites are also making tunnels inside the wood to grow their colonies which contain about 60,000 termites. Hence, this can quickly create an unsafe for anyone as the colony can spread and threaten the stability of the structure.
Besides that, termites are also attracted to moisture in homes, making areas like toilets and kitchen a common hotspot for termites to attack your surroundings and equipments. Aside from impairing the value of your household items, termite fecal pellets also cause discoloration and blisters on walls that can ruin the aesthetics of your home.
From the incidents above, it goes to show how much of a threat can termites cause to homes and homeowners without realisation. Termite infestations often go unnoticed and are difficult to detect as they are always hiding while they feast on your property. In some cases, it’s possible that your home has been infested for years, and that the visual damage you see today is only a symptom of a much deeper termite infestation.
Therefore, homeowners are encouraged to get their home checked from time to time to ensure that their homes are safe from termites. As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”, it is always important to do annual checkups for your home to detect for any signs of termite infestations.
