Signs of a Bat Infestation

Bats can gain access to the interior of a property via small openings and inhabit the ceiling. Older buildings and homes that do not have completely sealed off structures are especially vulnerable to bats entering. Properties near forested areas, bodies of water or with an abundance of fruit trees are more likely to attract bats as they tend to have a higher insect population which provide the bats with a source of food.

Recognising the signs of a bat problem and getting an immediate solution can reduce the risks associated with a bat infestation. Signs to look for include:

  • Bat droppings (guano) on floors and walls - bat feces can carry a fungus known to cause Histoplasmosis and Cryptocacaous. Avoid contact with the guano and do not inhale the air around it. Bats are also associated with rabies, although these cases are rare.
  • Bat odor - bat urine emits a very strong and offensive odor, which could linger inside your property.
  • Stains - bats can leave visible grease marks around the area they are inhabiting.
  • Bat bugs – bats can bring other parasites bat bugs which are often easily confused with bed bugs. Although these bugs may bite, they are unlikely to transmit any diseases.
  • Bat sounds – squeaking and other strange noises are unsettling.
