Wasps

Being stung by a wasp or bee can be very painful, and for some, can be life-threateneing if you are allergic to stings.  However, you are able to reduce these risks by taking sensible precautions when outdoors to ensure that wasp or bee nests are properly managed.

Wasps are often mistaken for bees and are also confused with other stinging insects.  They are also notorious for building their nests in places where people like to gather, like around your deck, in the eaves of your house, but they can also go undisturbed in attics and lofts until they are discovered in the spring.

Queen wasps emerge from hibernation in Springtime, when the days lengthen and the weather warms to start building a wasp nest, with more worker wasps hatching as the Summer progresses. Wasps are most active in the warmer summer months. The Common Wasp and German Wasp cause the most annoyance and painful stings. Even with their distinctive yellow and black body, they can still be confused with hornets.

Only female wasps have a sting that they can use repeatedly, if they feel threatened. Treating a wasp nest is often the most efficient way to control a wasp problem and reduce the threat of being stung.

Wasp Facts

It's only female wasps who have a sting which they can use repeatedly, if they feel under threat. In most cases a wasp sting causes no long term harm, but it can be life threatening if you are allergic to stings. Treating a wasp nest is often the most efficient way to control a wasp problem and reduce the threat of being stung.

Wasps can build their nests outdoors under sheltered eaves or, if they can gain access, wasps will find sheltered areas inside your home, such as:

  • Wall cavities
  • Roof spaces
  • Attics & lofts
  • Internal garages

The lifecycle of a wasp depends on the species, but in general a worker wasps ife can last 12-22 days, whil a queen can live up to a year.

Wasps can also very social creatures, and will build colonies based off how well they mate.  Since the purpose of a wasps life is to mate and/or create offspring, unmated wasps will eventuall die off.  Any unmated wasps, whether male or female, will persh around late summer to early fall, effectively dying of loneliness.

If a nest is discovered early enough in spring, removal using DIY wasp products may be possible but the danger from stings will remain.

Signs of wasp nests

If you are experiencing high numbers of wasps in your home or garden there is likely to be a nest nearby, either on your property, in your garden or very close by.

A mature nest in summer can contain thousands of wasps.

It is important to treat a wasp nest early to reduce the threat of a wasp sting, which can be very painful and even cause an allergic reaction.

Worried about a Wasp Nest?

You should not attempt to treat a wasp nest if you are sensitive to stings. If you disturb a nest, you may provoke the wasps inside to attack and sting you as a form of defence.

At Mefisto, we offer a professional wasp nest treatment service to protect you from harmful stings by eliminating the nest.
  • Qualified professionals - All our wasp control technicians are fully trained and equipped with all necessary safety gear to complete the treatment quickly and safely.

  • Safe treatments - Our technicians are certified and follow strict guidelines to ensure you and your family are safe from harm during treatment.

  • Nest removal -

We can also arrange for the removal of a nest (at a later date; at least 48 hours after treatment to allow for scout wasps to return and be killed) to reduce the risk of a secondary infestation.

Wasp Nest Removal

Removing a wasp nest can be very dangerous. Wasps inside the nest will feel threatened and often become aggressive. This could cause them to sting you and others as they defend their nest and young.

To get rid of wasps you do 'not' need to remove the nest, but you do need to treat it and the nesting wasps.

To reduce the risk of stings to you and your family, arrange for a professional wasp nest treatment. This effective solution will eliminate the wasps and keep you safe from the threat of stings.

  • Quick response - Guaranteed treatment within 2 working days.

Mefisto's Wasp Treatment

A mature wasp nest only found in late summer will almost certainly require professional treatment due to the high risk of wasp stings. By this stage, a nest may contain thousands of individual wasps.

At Mefisto, we offer a complete wasp control solution.
  • Our certified technicians have the expertise to identify the specific species.

  • All technicians have special protective gear to keep safe during treatment.

  • All treatments are customised to ensure effective control of the wasp nest, based on its location.

  • We offer expert advice to help prevent another problem in the future.

  • For peace of mind, we can return to remove the nest from your property, only after a minimum of 48 hours to allow complete treatment of the whole wasp colony (this extra visit will incur an additional charge). But removing the nest may not be possible if it's within a cavity wall or similar enclosed location.

  • If you still wish to remove the nest yourself, it would be better to wait till late autumn before attempting this and ensure you wear protective clothing as the treatment may still be active within the nest.

Wasp Prevention Tips

Early treatment of a wasp nest will help to keep you and your family safe from painful stings.

Making changes to your behaviour and how you handle food and drink outdoors can also help to deter this stinging pest.
  • Check for nests - Check your home and garden in early spring for nests, early on they will be walnut or golf ball in size - early small nests have fewer wasps and are easier to treat quickly. Look for nests in lofts, garages, sheds, cavity walls or under eaves.

  • Secure bins - Ensure outside bins have tightly fitting lids. Keep bins at a distance from doors and windows so wasps are not attracted to the contents.

  • Keep windows and doors shut - To prevent wasps entering inside your home.

  • Keep safe - If you have spotted a nest, make sure you keep children and pets away from the area.

Preventing Wasp Problems

Although high numbers of wasps in your home or garden almost certainly means there is a nest nearby, removing a wasp nest may not always be a possible solution.

If the nest is not on your property, you will have very limited control on what you can do to remove it.

Nests located in confined, hard-to-reach areas (such as cavity walls) will also be more difficult to treat.
