It’s no surprise that we see an increase in mosquitoes during the rainy season, but if you’re noticing more flies, ants, rodents and cockroaches than normal, that’s no coincidence either. Rainy weather brings out more pests for the simple reason that pests, like all living things, need water to survive. Rain creates damp conditions which encourage cockroaches, flies and ants to come out of their harbourage to quench their thirst.
Many pests also thrive in damp conditions. If you’ve ever had a leaky faucet under your kitchen cabinet, chances are you may have noticed cockroaches nearby. Termites also prefer damp, dark conditions which is why leaks around your property are not a good idea. Female mosquitoes need water to breed. Just half a tablespoon is enough to bring about a major mosquito infestation.
Heavy rain can also flood pests’ harbourage forcing them to find new areas to shelter. Rodents are generally people shy and prefer to stay out of sight but if you’re noticing them more frequently during rainy weather it could be that their harbourage has been flooded and they are seeking dry areas to build their nests. Rain also bring plant debris and leaf litter which offer a source of food and material for building shelter.
While we have no control over the weather, there are steps property owners can take to limit the opportunities for pest populations to thrive. Keeping indoor surfaces dry and clean is a simple but effective way to make your home less attractive to pests. Ensure leaks are promptly repaired – both inside and outside the home and keep lawn tidy and free of any plant debris. Check guttering regularly to remove blockages that will encourage water to pool. Consider installing rodent proofing where necessary. While DIY rodent control can help in killing rodents that are already on your property, professional rodent proofing can prevent new ones from entering.
If you’ve taken all of the above steps and are still struggling with pest issues during the rainy season, call in the professionals for expert control methods that may include proofing, baiting and traps.
