Mosquito diseases

Mosquito diseases are on the rise as invasive species continue to establish populations in Canada.

As a result of climate change and globalization over the course of the last 20 years, there has been a huge increase in the number of new and emerging vector-borne diseases reported annually in Canada. In particular, viral and protozoan diseases spread by mosquitoes such as:

  • West Nile Virus (WNV)
  • Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)
  • Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE)
  • St. Louis Encephalitis (SLE)
  • La Crosse Virus (LAC) and,
  • Canine Heartworm

Vector-borne diseases are bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases that are commonly transmitted by blood-sucking arthropods such as mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, lice, biting flies and true bugs - although the term "vector" also applies to other carriers like rodents that can transmit hantavirus.

These diseases do not only infect people, but animals as well since they are spread by insects and arthropods; which makes them difficult to prevent and control.

Vector-borne diseases are not new in Canada and some diseases, like Eastern Equine Encephalitis have had a long history in some provinces, while others like West Nile Virus have only recently been introduced.

Mosquito-borne diseases

Not many people know that the minuscule mosquito is single-handedly the principle organism that causes the most human suffering worldwide and is solely responsible for more human deaths annually than any other living creature.

Canada is no longer immune to diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and we are now seeing many more reports in local news about fatalities caused by mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit.

The scientific community is developing new vaccines and insecticides derived from natural products to reduce mosquitoes that spread diseases.

While scientists and researchers are feverishly working towards new strategies aimed at disrupting the transmission of mosquito-borne diseases, there are several steps you can take right now to prevent mosquitoes from developing in your yard and neighborhood.
