What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. It can progress to more a deadly form of the disease known as dengue haemorrhagic fever and cause death.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 50-100 million people are infected by dengue fever globally every year and around 3 out of every 100 dengue infections are fatal.

Dengue remains a serious public health problem with the continuous growth in the number of cases and fatalities year on year. Here are the latest dengue updates in Malaysia for year 2016.

  • 19th May 2016 - Dengue cases in Malaysia from 8 to 14 May have reduced by 0.3% nationwide with 1,325 reported, as compared to the week before with 1,329. Dengue hotspots have also dropped to 75 localities from 92 as reported last week. However, 7 states are still showing growth including, Johor, Sabah, Perak, Kedah Sarawak, Kelantan and Negeri Sembilan. As of 14 May, total cumulative number of dengue cases from January 2016 stood at 46,856 cases. The public are advised to still take proactive measures against breeding of Aedes mosquitoes as dengue cases in the country are expected to rise again due to the La Nina phenomenon, which is set to bring excessive downpour until October.

  • 12th April 2016 - Following the El Nino phenomenon, dengue cases in Malaysia have dropped by 5 cases on 1st week of April 2016 compared to the week before. However, the total number of reported cases on YTD 2016 still show 8.9% growth with 37,190 cases compared to 34,144 during the same period last year.

  • 20th February 2016 - A total number of 22,518 cases have been reported, showing 5.7% growth compared to the same period last year. Selangor remains as the state with the highest number of cases recorded at 11,201 and 17 deaths.
