The World’s Deadliest Creature: Why Mosquitoes Are More Dangerous Than You Think

It often comes as a surprise to people when they learn that the deadliest creature in the world is not the great white shark or the lion; but the small and unassuming mosquito. Mosquitoes are responsible for more deaths globally than any other animal, claiming over 700,000 lives every year through the transmission of deadly diseases such as malaria and dengue fever.

Our region is particularly vulnerable to mosquitoes and the diseases they cause. At Rentokil Initial, we’ve seen firsthand how mosquito populations can quickly become a serious threat. In this blog, we’re diving into what makes mosquitoes so dangerous, and how Rentokil Initial’s expert mosquito control solutions help reduce these risks to protect homes, communities, and businesses.

According to CARPHA (Caribbean Public Health Agency) the Caribbean and Americas saw over 7,700 mosquito related deaths in 2024, a 200% increase from 2023. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue surged in 2024, contributing to the majority of deaths.

Small Size, Massive Impact

Mosquitoes are found on every continent except Antarctica. There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes worldwide, but roughly 70 species found in the Caribbean. While not all of them transmit disease, the ones that do pose a major public health challenge.

Here are three of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in our part of the world:

Dengue Fever: The most common mosquito-borne virus in the Caribbean region, dengue fever is often referred to as “breakbone fever” for its severe muscle and joint pain. Dengue is spread by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito which is the most common species found in our region.  It is estimated that over 12 million people in the Americas region were infected with dengue in 2024. While dengue is potentially fatal, the majority of patients recover. There is no specific treatment other than symptom management. Outbreaks continue to grow due to urbanization and climate change.

Zika Virus: Zika gained global attention in 2015-2016 due to its link to birth defects like microcephaly. Like dengue, zika is spread by the Aedes mosquito and has shown how quickly a mosquito-borne illness can become a global concern.

Malaria: While malaria is typically found in African and Asia, cases have been confirmed in 2024 and 2025 in the Caribbean. Responsible for more than 600,000 deaths annually, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa, malaria is transmitted by the Anopheles mosquito. While treatable, prevention is key, especially in vulnerable regions.

These are just a few examples—other illnesses include chikungunya, yellow fever, and West Nile virus. The common denominator? They’re all spread through a single mosquito bite.

The Hidden Costs of Mosquito Infestations

Beyond the obvious health risks, mosquito infestations come with a range of other consequences:

-        Reduced productivity in business and agriculture due to worker absenteeism
-        Negative impacts on tourism and hospitality in affected areas which makes our tourism driven                economies particularly vulnerable
-        Emotional and financial strain on families dealing with illness or hospitalisation

Mosquitoes thrive in warm, wet environments, making homes and commercial properties with standing water, poor drainage, or overgrown vegetation particularly vulnerable. Without proper planning and development, communities are vulnerable to exploding mosquito populations that can prove problematic to manage.

How Rentokil Initial Can Help

Mosquito control is a community responsibility but it requires more than just spraying. Spraying (or fogging) is just one of several steps we take at Rentokil Initial. Our approach is multi-faceted aimed at targeting mosquitoes at every stage of their life cycle and this has been developed from years of rigorous research and development.

Our strategic, science-backed approach involves:

1. Expert Inspections

Our technicians are trained to identify mosquito breeding hotspots that most people overlook—like clogged gutters, small containers, or shady corners of your garden.

2. Targeted Treatments

We use professional-grade larvicides to target larvae in stagnant water and break the breeding cycle. We also use ULV (ultra-low volume mist) to fog adult mosquitoes in flight and in hard to reach areas.

3. Sustainable Solutions

Mosquito traps are rapidly becoming the gold standard in ongoing mosquito control as they represent a sustainable yet highly effective option. We offer a range suitable for both indoor and outdoor use which use mosquitoes’ own behavior against them resulting in long term mosquito prevention and control

4. Commercial and Residential Solutions

From protecting your backyard to securing large hospitality sites or healthcare facilities, we tailor our solutions to meet your specific needs and local risk levels.

A Global Problem That Requires Local Action

Mosquitoes may be small, but their global impact is anything but. In today’s world—where climate change, travel, and urban growth are making mosquito-borne illnesses more common—staying protected is more important than ever.
