I recently returned from a week’s holiday in Norfolk with the family; a time to relax, switch off and think of other things than besides work. Unfortunately not!
HOLIDAY MODE INITIATED:
We arrive at our caravan and with the temperatures soaring open every available window and door; I then see things flying outside the door. After investigating I find that these large insects are May Bugs or Cockchafers flying about. Now as the name suggests these should be flying around about……May but this is July!
In our team meetings for the South-East we have a competition every month on who can bring in the best pest or insect so it can be used in training. I think; I know a couple of these will make good specimens, so I run around the caravan site trying to catch some of these blighters in a carrier bag getting funny looks from my fellow campers. After ten minutes I apprehend two of them.
BACK TO HOLIDAY MODE:
What can be more appealing on a holiday than going to the beach, we head for Great Yarmouth for the British seaside experience, you know fish & chips, ice cream etc.
My wife says ‘let’s visit a rock shop where they do demonstrations on how they make the stuff’; arriving there I don’t notice the tons of different flavoured rocks but the two Rentokil fly units there in the middle and back of the shop, I then say proudly to the missus “look they’re Luminos 4′s”; damn this brain of mine.
RESET TO HOLIDAY MODE:
We then go and visit a Zoo near Cromer lots of animals to look at; none that I find inspecting premises in London!!!
We then walk up a ramp to a Amazonian enclosure what do I see metal perimeter boxes outside of this building, I say to the wife they don’t look like Rentokil boxes, I wonder who does the Pest control here?
MUST SWITCH PEST CONTROL BRAIN OFF!
Near to the entrance there is a large pond do I look at the exotic animals on and around it? No I spot rat burrows at the edge of it.
HOLIDAY MODE INTIATED
We’re near Cromer let’s go to the beach; after sitting down to have our lunch I spot some birds they’re Herring Gulls the subject of one of my previous posts.
HOLIDAY MODE…..ERROR PLEASE REBOOT AND TRY AGAIN.
Now I don’t know if this happens to other people in their jobs but after a stressful time at work you want to get away from the job with a holiday but pest control is all around us and is everywhere even if you are not looking for it!

It is really re-assuring to hear of a pest control technician so enthusiastic and committed to the fight against pests!
This job is very much the ‘busmans holiday’ as they say.
I know myself and other Surveyors have a routine we are stuck with wherever we may travel, business or pleasure.
Once checked in, enter bedroom then carry out the usual …
1.place baggage safely on table away from bed and floor
2. Check bed, mattress, sheets, headboard and carpet edges for Bed Bug evidence… Well even the 5* hotels are not exempt from a visit of these creatures.
3.Now place baggage on bed and unpack.
4. relax and rest up
@Barry – funny you should say the above – this is pretty much identical to my very early blog post about Bed Bugs & Me. Great minds and all that…
Wanna very nice joke?))
Why is the letter A like a flower? Because a Bee comes after it!

I liked it. So much useful material. I read with great interest.
