How To Get Rid of Flies – Mr Miyagi style

Chopsticks - effective fly control the Mr Miyagi wayIf you mention the name Mr. Miyagi to anyone in their 20’s or 30’s, they immediately think of the film Karate Kid (I loved this when I was younger and I can’t believe they are re-making it!). I then remembered a particular scene from the film showing a unique, and in my opinion, inimitable method of fly control – using chopsticks! He is asked in the film if a fly swatter would not be easier, to which Mr Miyagi replies “Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything”. Well, there’s a statement for you.

I have never tried using chopsticks, I think it is hard enough to use your hands to swat flies. I did often attempt the latter method in my younger years but sadly as I do not possess the reflexes of a ninja, my success rate was not that high.

So, my suggestion is to rely on effective methods to get rid of flies, granted they are not as imaginative as chopsticks, but at least they are successful!

1. Always cover food :

This is very obvious and simple to do. When flies land on food they effectively mush it up, spit on it, mush it some more and then ingest. Their leftovers will contain all sorts of bugs and nasties and in some cases serious diseases, which you do NOT want to digest.

2. Clear away food and liquid spillages :

Flies are not fussy. Food is food, whether it is delicious and fresh, left overs, spillages and crumbs or stale and mouldy in the food recylcying bin many of us now have to fill for the council to take away.

3. Fit fly screens to windows :

This is especially important near or around kitchen and waste areas. Don’t let them in to spoil your bolognaise sauce before you have even got it to the dinner table!

4. Make sure all rubbish bins have tightly sealed lids :

As mentioned in #3, any type of food will do for flies. Food waste… well, that is a mere technicality.

5. After dark, keep windows closed :

Or at least draw your curtains to block out light. Those pesky flies are attracted to the light and will want to keep you company indoors – although the feeling will not be mutual, I am sure.

House flyThese are simply some basic tips and suggestions for effective fly control of course,  and can be applied to both residential and commercial premises. They will also provide a much higher success rate than using chopsticks!

If you have ever tried any other novel ways of catching flies do let me know……

I remember Karate Kid – ‘wax on, wax off’.

I wonder what the new films are going to be like? Maybe they will have a new way of killing flies
